Eyelid Surgery 

Introduction

Eyelid surgery is one of Dr. Zhang's primary specialties. In his graduate studies, he researched the surgical treatment of severe upper eyelid ptosis and developed techinique for correcting eyelid conditions. Over time, Dr. Zhang has established a comprehensive and systematic approach to eyelid surgery that has functional improvement and natural aesthetic results. 

Background

During his early clinical career at the Plastic Surgery Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Dr. Zhang gained extensive experience treating congenital eyelid abnormalities, functional eyelid disorders, and cosmetic eyelid concerns.

Over the past 20 years, he has continued to refine and develop specialized eyelid surgery techniques designed to address the unique anatomical and age-related changes affecting the eyelids. This work ultimately led to the creation of his proprietary SMART Diagnostic & Treatment System, which provides individualized surgical planning and treatment strategies for patients of different ages and eyelid conditions

Philosophy 

Dr. Zhang believes that successful eyelid surgery must be individualized rather than performed using a single standardized technique.

The eyelids undergo significant anatomical changes throughout life, and surgical planning must account for these age-related differences. Younger patients often require relatively straightforward procedures, while patients in their 30s, 40s, and beyond require more sophisticated assessment of skin laxity, tissue descent, and eyelid support structures.

One of the most critical factors in achieving long-lasting results is accurately determining the amount of excess skin that should be removed. In Dr. Zhang’s experience, many unsatisfactory outcomes occur because insufficient skin is removed, causing the eyelids to gradually return to their preoperative appearance.

For this reason, Dr. Zhang emphasizes long-term stability and natural aging outcomes rather than focusing solely on immediate postoperative appearance. Every procedure is carefully planned to achieve results that remain attractive and functional for many years

The SMART Diagnostic & Treatment System is Dr. Zhang’s proprietary eyelid diagnostic and treatment framework developed through decades of clinical practice and research.

This system recognizes that eyelid aging and eyelid disorders vary significantly between individuals and age groups. Rather than applying a uniform surgical approach, the SMART system tailors treatment according to the patient’s age, anatomical characteristics, functional concerns, and degree of tissue aging.
